Diary, 1857.

His diary for the year 1857 in East Bridgewater contains very brief, daily entries concerning meetings, visits, the weather, books read or purchased, and sermons written by Wilcox. He frequently exchanged pulpits with other ministers, performed marriages, and officiated at funerals. The majority of entries are his evaluation of the town's schools and teachers, i.e., teaching methods, effectiveness, etc. The diary also includes sundry cash accounts.

Philo Beckwith Wilcox (1818-1898) was born in Benson, Vt. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1845, was ordained in 1851, and settled as minister with the Union Church in East and West Bridgewater, Mass., as well as school examiner. He remained there until 1860, when he began serving in various parishes in Maine. Wilcox settled in Northborough, Mass., in 1872 as minister without charge. From the description of Diary, 1857.
